TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY EDITION CELEBRATES NEW STORIES OF JOY, HEALING, AND THE SPIRIT OF ONE REMARKABLE DOG
NEW YORK, NY — August 1, 2025 —Morehouse Publishing is pleased to announce the newly revised and updated publication of The Gospel According to Sam.
Twenty years ago, readers fell in love with Sam—the spirited, earless Airedale who survived a house fire and went on to become a wounded healer, spiritual companion, and unlikely parish celebrity. Now, The Gospel According to Sam returns in a newly revised and expanded 20thanniversary edition, filled with brand-new stories that will inspire laughter, tears, and faith.
Offering “animal stories for the soul,” this volume draws on Miller’s ministry and life alongside Sam and a menagerie of other creatures—rabbits, pigs, yaks, bugs, and birds—all woven into meditations on hope, healing, and the everyday moments where grace sneaks in. In this special edition, readers will meet the people who found God through Sam’s story, the dogs rescued in his memory, and the sermons that still evoke his faithful bark.
“Miller is a magician with language,” praises William Broyles Jr., the screenwriter of “Apollo 13,” “The Polar Express,” and “Cast Away.” “His stories are…parables, gateways into the deep mysteries of love, life, and death.” Perfect for fans of Marley and Me and My Life in Dog Years, this book is a spiritual feast: heartwarming, hilarious, and holy.
William Miller is an Episcopal priest and writer who has lived in Hawaii, New Orleans, Chicago, and Texas. He has rescued and raised eight dogs, starting with Sam. He owned Padre’s, a legendary music venue in Marfa, Texas, and launched four music festivals. He is also the author of The Beer Drinker’s Guide to God: The Whole and Holy Truth about Lager, Loving, and Living and The Last Howlelujah: Tails from the Trail. He is the founder of Saint Cecilia’s, a creative spiritual community, where he lives in Round Top, Texas.
